Time is Running Out for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Feb 13, 2023

There is less than a month before we get together to talk about Betty Smith’s extraordinary novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Fear not; don’t give up! You will find yourself flying through this book.

The second half of Great Books 77 begins on Tuesday, March 7, when we discuss this coming of age novel. As this is the first time Smith’s book appears on our GB list, we can discuss its importance as one of the first coming of age stories with a female protagonist. Is it worthy enough to be included part of the GB pantheon?

We can’t answer these questions until we have read the book AND made time to join in the discussion on March 7, at 7:00 p.m. at the South Euclid – Lyndhurst Library Branch ( or on Zoom if you can’t make it in person). Meeting details are on the website.
