The 2023-24 GB List: What’s New and Some Favorites

Jun 19, 2023

The Count of Monte Cristo has been discussed on this website, so the only fact I would add is that this novel has never been on our GB schedule.

Edgar Allan Poe also makes his debut this year with two short stories.

St. Benedict’s The Rule has made it on the schedule only twice in our 78 years. The Rule lays out some pragmatic instruction — not always within a religious context — on how to live together and get along.

The U.S. Constitution is a member favorite which was read only five years ago. It is certainly worthy of regular review and discussion.

The Scottish Play.* By The Bard. Enough said.

Ceremony is a novel written by Leslie Marmon Silko,  a Laguna Pueblo Indian writer. A few GB members expressed interest in reading works from indigenous people, and Ceremony was chosen for both its cultural and literary impact.

Plato’s Lysis has been little studied by this group, having only made the list once before in year 37 (1982-83).

Swift’s A Modest Proposal surprisingly has never made the list, though his Gulliver’s Travels has been an often read favorite of this group.

Long Day’s Journey into Night will be our “modern” play. Into the darkness we go…

We close out the year with a timely title in light of climate change: Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.
