Helpful Hint — Or Blasphemy

Sep 19, 2023

In two weeks we gather together (in-person or virtually) to discuss the epic novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. This mid-nineteenth century adventure story is incredibly long and detailed. So many characters! I would argue that the plot itself is straightforward, quickly and easily grasped by the reader in the first few chapters. The plot — Edmond’s path to revenge — however, is long and convoluted indeed.
By nature I am a rule follower. Study guides (e.g., Cliffs Notes, SparkNotes) were a no-no, a cheat. I think many people do use them in lieu of actually reading the assignment. That is cheating, without a doubt. It was only about 20 years ago that I took the plunge and used a study guide in parallel with reading a novel. My retention of the characters and the plot twists was improved to a remarkable degree.
So please, if you’ve read The Count or are still trying to finish it, grab one of the popular study guides and follow along. You will read faster and you will retain more information. Keep in mind that we will be looking at this story in broad strokes. Don’t sweat the details, the many minor characters, the many plot points!
I hope to see you Tuesday, October 3, 7:00 p.m. at the South Euclid Library, 1876 S. Green Road. You can join the conversation virtually; just follow the instructions on this website.
This meeting will begin my 40th year with the venerable Great Books of Greater Cleveland. Come help me celebrate by diving into a lively discussion!
