Addiction, Dysfunction: A Journey

Apr 11, 2024

Long Day’s Journey into Night, written in the 1950s, strongly resonates with us today, and will continue to do so for future generations. We discuss O’Neill’s play, widely considered his magnum opus, this Tuesday, April 16, 7:00 p.m. This drama which takes place in a single day, is of course about addiction, but it also presents the unfolding failures within a catastrophically dysfunctional family.

The 1962 film adaptation of this play by the same name is a direct translation of O’Neill’s stage play, without any major cuts or changes to the source material. The movie won Oscars for best actress (Katharine Hepburn) and best actor (Ralph Richardson). I bought it for a couple dollars on Amazon Prime, but it may be on other platforms as well.

Read it; watch it; and participate in the discussion this Tuesday. Join us in person at the South Euclid – Lyndhurst Library on South Green Road, or join virtually. We always have a healthy mix of both in person and virtual participants, so do what is most comfortable for you. Don’t miss this opportunity — we are close to winding up another Great Books year!
